Bobby Rich was born.

This came as a big surprise to his parents, Marge & Howard, who thought they were getting a  puppy.   And to his sisters, Marcia & Jan, who thought they were The Brady Bunch.  He got started on the radio when he was 14. He just kept doing it because:

"I love what I do and I DO what I LOVE"

  • He loves Tucson too. He came here in 1992 and never left. The rest of the story is long and not really all that fascinating. However... if you really want to know more information than anyone would ever need, click here
  • Or if you are a broadcaster, a wanna-be broadcaster or just a really weird person--read this really long article in broadcast publication Inside Radio.

Feel Good Songs
By brich @ 5:23 PM :: 1021 Views :: 0 Comments

I have long tried to find ways to make our morning show listeners get their day started in a happy and a positive mood. Even before arriving in Tucson I used the motto of "Good Clean Fun" for the morning shows I was part of in San Diego and Seattle. In fact, at one station I even authored a station jingle with the lyrics  "It's a Real Good, Feel Good Feeling!" Yeah I know it was very hokey and that station was not one of my bigger success stories. ;-)

Now I have a special playlist I have assembled on my iPod. They are songs that just simply make me FEEL GOOD. It's a work in progress as I am always finding songs to add. There are over 100 so far.

It had not occurred to me to share them with my listeners until about a year ago. Debbie was reading the book everybody was talking about. At least if you consider Oprah “everybody.” Yes, it was  “The Secret.”

And wouldn’t you know it, she found the following passage: (pg. 37)

"Secret Shifters (are) things that can change your feelings in a snap. It might be beautiful memories, future events, funny moments, YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC. If you find yourself angry or frustrated or not feeling good, focus on one of your Secret Shifters. It only takes a moment of changing focus to shift yourself and shift your frequency."

Since I had already decided my list was songs that made me feel good if I was a little blue it really hit home. I could play some on the radio as kind of a daily motivator and workday good mood starter.

Some are classic 60’s, 70’s, 80’s (Beatles “Good Day Sunshine”; Beach Boys “Warmth of the Sun”; Stevie Wonder “Overjoyed”; Bad English “When I See You Smile”; Sheena Easton “Morning Train”.) Some are novelty (Steve Martin “King Tut”; Dick VanDyke “Put On A Happy Face”). Some are hip (Donald Fagen “IGY-What A Beautiful World”; Michael Buble “Feeling Good”.) Some are newer songs (Jack Johnson “Banana Pancakes”; Goo Goo Dolls “Better Days”) and even some standards (Sinatra “Fly Me To The Moon”; Dean Martin “That’s Amore”)

So Now I bring my iPod to the radio station a few times a week and--usually between 6:20am and 6:40am--I play one of them.

I have had emails and calls almost every time from some listener or another thanking me for playing it. Some have asked for my list (below is a partial list.) Recently I got this message from listener Nick:

"I'm really enjoying your FEEL GOOD songs that you've been playing from your iPod.

I thought of you today when walking about town,
and witnessed some really nasty road rage. The language and anger that
was going back and forth between these two guys was horrible. I thought
they needed to relax, chill and get a little love of their fellow man in
their lives. So often we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our
lives and forget the big picture. These two guys in a stressed out hurry
to get to their destinations, could have turned into something much
worse. This all made me thankful for the small moment you take each
morning to put good vibes out in our universe.

I've been a long time fan and listener of your morning program and "Bobby's iPod"
is a great addition. Thanks so much!"

He went on to suggest a song that I will eventually add to my list and play some morning.

You are welcome to make suggestions by clicking "Comment" on this blog or email me personally here.
