*SKIP BIO FOR BOBBY'S BLOG*
Bobby Rich was born.
This came as a big surprise to his parents, Marge & Howard, who thought they were getting a puppy. And to his sisters, Marcia & Jan, who thought they were The Brady Bunch. He got started on the radio when he was 14. He just kept doing it because:
"I love what I do and I DO what I LOVE"
- He loves Tucson too. He came here in 1992 and never left. The rest of the story is long and not really all that fascinating. However... if you really want to know more information than anyone would ever need, click here
- Or if you are a broadcaster, a wanna-be broadcaster or just a really weird person--read this really long article in broadcast publication Inside Radio.

Roller Derby--The Hottest Thing On Wheels

In 1972 there was a movie called KANSAS CITY BOMBER where skater K. C. Carr tries to balance her desire for a happy personal life and her dreams of stardom.
It was a big deal movie. Quite possibly because “K.C. Carr” was portrayed by RAQUEL WELCH—then and now a glamorous woman with a body that won’t quit. And as far as we know it (the body) still hasn’t (quit.)
That introduction to the sport of ROLLER DERBY permanently implanted images which are impossible to erase.
A new Hollywood feature film "Whip It," being produced by Drew Barrymore's production company starts filming July 28, in Detroit, Saline, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. "Whip It," Barrymore's directorial debut, stars actress Ellen Page in the story of a teenage girl who discovers the world of roller derby.
So to learn that Roller Derby exists in 2008 and teams of the wild Raquel Welch’s of today compete right here in Tucson is… well, pretty captivating.
(Ferocious Oxide of the Copper Queens) The flat-track roller derby they play is a full-contact sport with no choreographing says TucsonRollerDerby.com. And I have witnessed it up close and I believe it. These women are tough and aggressive and the skaters are definitely athletes.
But what makes it even more fun is their snazzy uniforms and saucy names. The Furious Truckstop Waitresses (FTW), the Iron Curtain, the VICE Squad, the Copper Queens and the Saddletramps, an ensemble team formed for inter-league challenges. And the skaters include: Dirty Terry, Venus Dynamite, Lavender Pitt, Cheap Ore, Batwina (above), The Turkish Slammer, Sloppy Flo and Gracie Spoon to name a few.
Oh--that is Mrs. Grant on the left with Doctor Z of the Iron Curtain. So far Mrs. G is sticking with being a soccer mom, but who knows what she will try next? Admission for the double header bouts is $10 at Bladeworld (Grant and I-10).
Finally, there are other entertaining resons to go to Roller Derby in Tucson. Not the least of which are Downtown Dave and Jeff Mann--the genuinely hysterical play-by-play public address announcers. We just hope they don't get a morning radio gig so we don't have to compete against them.

Thanks for the kind words about Tucson Roller Derby, Bobby. I'm a big fan of the film Kansas City Bomber, as well. Hopefully we'll see you at the championships on August 16th! ~DD
PS: Jeff and I have no future plans to get into radio...
