15 mph School Zone Tips
Here are some things you might not have known about the 15 mph school zones:
-
If any person is school zone crosswalk, they must be completely out of the crosswalk before any vehicle can proceed in either direction.
-
Passing is not permitted in a 15 mph zone, no matter how slow another vehicle may be traveling. Passing doesn't mean getting around the vehicle. No passing means that your bumper can't pass any other car's bumper going in your same direction.
-
There is zero tolerance in a 15 mph zone. It is never reasonable or prudent to go faster in a school zone. You can be cited for going 16 mph in a 15 mph zone.
-
Once you have driven entirely past the crosswalk, you may resume the normal speed for that street.
Pima County's speed cameras are LIVE and ticketing drivers:
1. La Cholla near Sunset.
2. Mission near Grubstake (Between Irvington & Nebraska)
3. Ina near Vista de las Candelas (Between 1st Avenue & Orange Grove)
4. Swan near Calle Barril. (Between River & Sunrise)
5. Valencia near Wilmot
6. Valencia near Camino de la Tierra
7. Ruthrauff/Wetmore, between LaCholla & LaCanada, at Rillito St.
8. Alvernon Way near Station Master (Between Irvington & Ajo Way)
9. River Road near Hacienda del Sol
10. Nogales Highway near Hermans Road (This addition replaces the original location of Nogales Highway/Duval Mine Road, in Green Valley.)
These 10 roadway corridors account for nearly 26% of all speeding tickets issued in 2008, and more than 4,100 crashes over the last 3 years.
What'll it cost me?
Here's a schedule of the base fines if you're caught speeding by one of the Pima Co. speed cameras:
11-15 MPH over the posted speed limit = $183
16-20 MPH over = $202
21-25 MPH over = $222
26-30 MPH over = $235
31 MPH - Over = $356
Additionally, there are 2 fees tacked on to the base fine.
Automation fee - $18.50
Photo Enforcement fee - $14.75
So, for example, if you're caught speeding at 11 MPH over the posted speed limit, the TOTAL fine will be $216.25 after everything is factored.
